Underground Railroad Program

Join us at the Museum on Thursday, June 18 from 5:00 – 7:00pm for a program on the Underground Railroad in Northwest Indiana.
This public program will offer a broad historical look at the Underground Railroad in northwestern Indiana, highlighting the courageous journeys of freedom seekers and the efforts of local abolitionists who assisted them in their pursuit of liberty. Special attention will be given to abolitionist Charles Osborn, whose anti-slavery work and advocacy helped shape early resistance movements in the region.
The event will also explore the continuing significance of Juneteenth, commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, and reflecting on how the legacy of freedom and equality continues to connect Black and White Americans today through shared history and remembrance.
In addition, organizers will present information about ongoing efforts to establish a nationally recognized “Chicago to Detroit Freedom Trail,” linking important Underground Railroad sites across northern Indiana and neighboring states. The proposed trail aims to preserve and interpret the stories of those who risked their lives in the struggle for freedom.
The evening will feature guest speakers, historical presentations, and community discussion. Refreshments will be served.
