La Porte County Historical Society Museum Re-Opening
The La Porte County Historical Society Museum re-opened to the public on Tuesday, July 7, 2020, at 2405 Indiana Avenue in La Porte.
In order to protect the public, museum staff, and volunteers from COVID-19, certain restrictions will be in place. Everyone entering the building will be required to wear masks for the entire duration of their visit. Gloves and hand sanitizer will be available.
If there are special circumstances that make the wearing of a mask difficult, or if these restrictions should interfere with the enjoyment of your visit, the Historical Society recommends postponing your visit until such time when the restrictions can be eased.
Each visitor, or one parent of a family group, will be required to complete a health questionnaire. Please call ahead if there are more than five persons in your party.
To use the Fern Eddy Schultz Research Library or to donate items for the Museum, please call 219-324-6767 to schedule an appointment.

Half Price Individual Memberships Through the End of the Year
The La Porte County Historical Society has reduced the Individual membership dues by 50% from now through the end of the year. Memberships run from January 1st through December 30th each year. Beginning on July 1st, the Individual membership fees are reduced from $15.00 to $7.50 as there are only six months remaining in the calendar year. The membership fees for other membership categories have not been reduced.
Membership benefits include free admission to the La Porte County Historical Society Museum, free admission to Museum events and programs, and the quarterly newsletter “The Oldletter” featuring articles on La Porte County’s unique heritage, along with information on current events, programs, and happenings at the Museum. In addition, membership entitles all members to admission to the six annual La Porte County Historical Society meetings featuring programs and the Historian of the Year awards.
Other levels of membership are available. Sustaining memberships are $25 and besides the benefits of the Individual membership also include a gift shop discount of 10%; Patron memberships are $40 and also include one Historical Society calendar; Lifetime memberships are $200 and also include a Lifetime membership certificate; and a Business/Corporate membership which is $250 and also includes the business’ name on the recognition board in the Museum.
Membership dues support the Historical Society’s mission and the Museum. In part, the Historical Society’s mission is to collect, preserve, and display artifacts related to La Porte County, and to promote historical inquiry and study of the history of Indiana and La Porte County. The La Porte County Historical Society Museum is one of the largest county museums in Indiana, and is a 501(C)3 non-profit organization.
The Museum is located at 2405 Indiana Avenue, La Porte. The re-opening date for the Museum is July 7, 2020, with limited hours, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. The La Porte County Historical Society’s Annual Car Show, scheduled for Saturday, July 18, 2020, has been cancelled due to COVID-19. The La Porte County Historical Society continues to be closed to the public, and all events and programs have been cancelled or postponed to protect the health of our patrons, volunteers, and staff.
