The program is free to the public and will begin at 7:00 p.m. at the Museum\, 2405 Indiana Avenue\, La Porte. \nOften when the story of Belle Gunness is told\, it ends abruptly after the discovery of her crimes\, leaving unexplored the great mysteries of the case. Did she die in the fire\, or did she get away?\nWas she murdered by Ray Lamphere\, or did she poison another woman and place her corpse in the cellar? Some of these questions may never be completely answered\, but we can determine if the prosecutor proved his case beyond a reasonable doubt. \nIn this program\, Judge Boklund will pick up the story where others have left off\, examining the sweeping madness that spread through the country after discovery of the Gunness crimes\, and the things that made the criminal investigation and jury selection almost impossible. He also will take a closer look at the testimony of the four doctors who autopsied the bodies that were recovered from the cellar. Their testimony was the only evidence the prosecutor had that could have proven that the adult body in the cellar was that of Belle Gunness\, and that she had died as a result of the fire. And Bert Cook\, Executive Director of the La Porte Economic Advancement Partnership (LEAP)\, will share insights about the most recent economic development successes in La Porte and what’s in store for the future of La Porte’s downtown development. \nTom Torluemke is an Indiana-based\, contemporary American artist whose works include paintings\, drawings\, sculptures\, and installations in a variety of mediums. Torluemke’s work has been represented in more than 100 solo\, curated\, and juried group shows\, in addition to other projects\, awards\, grants\, and commissions he has received. Torluemke began his teaching career at the North Shore Art League in Winnetka\, Illinois in 1984. From there he taught at his alma mater\, The American Academy of Art\, where he received his BFA in 1996. He then taught at The School of The Art Institute and at Valparaiso University. In 1998\, Torluemke began to pursue public art projects and has completed numerous projects over the past decade including murals in Hammond\, Hobart\, Terre Haute\, and Indianapolis. \nBert Cook has worked in the economic development field for 14 years. He previously worked with the Portage Economic Development Corporation as their Executive Director and with the La Porte County Economic Development Alliance as Retention and Expansion Coordinator. Mr. Cook has a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management from Purdue University North Central and has received development certificates from Ball State University and Purdue University North Central. A 1947 study found that Indiana authors ranked second to New York in the number of bestsellers produced in the previous 40 years. Hockett\, born in La Porte and a 1956 graduate of La Porte High School\, spent the majority of his career as an art professor at Gulf Coast College in Panama City\, Florida. Hockett earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from Indiana University and then taught at La Porte High School for three years before moving to Florida. \nHockett has graciously donated a number of items from his collection to the Museum\, and the majority will be on display in this exhibit. He has produced numerous paintings\, sketches\, and sculptures throughout his lifetime. His works have been installed in the Florida Supreme Court\, Panama City Florida International Airport\, and the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica. \nThe Roland Hockett Exhibit will include approximately 30 of the artist’s works including multi-media\, copper work\, paintings\, and sketches\, both framed and unframed. Bushemi\, one of the Indiana Historical Society’s traveling exhibits\, from April 2- May 7. The exhibit\, featuring images of American GIs who participated in World War II invasions.\n\nVisitors to the exhibit will be immersed in the Gary native’s views through numerous magazine covers and personal photographs\, including those of the soldiers with whom he traveled. One series of photographs shows soldiers training at Ft. Bragg\, in what Bushemi’s friend and colleague Marion Hargrove called the “Hardening Process.” Another series includes close-up portraits of soldiers who were featured in a YANK article about the battle for New Georgia. \nBushemi died February 19\, 1944\, when he and other correspondents became the target for a series of Japanese knee-mortar shells during the invasion of Eniwetok. Shrapnel from the shells hit and mortally wounded the photographer. As navy surgeons frantically attempted to save Bushemi’s life\, the photographer gave his epitaph\, telling colleague Merle Miller “be sure to get those pictures back to the office.” Images of both Bushemi’s battleship funeral service and his funeral service back home in Gary\, Ind.\, are included in the exhibit.
