Hilt Ice House Interior

This photograph shows the inside of an ice house, and is probably a rare view indeed. Looking across the top of the blocks of ice toward the opening in the far wall, part of the conveyor system that lifted the ice from the shore of the lake is visible. The Hilt Ice Co. owned property around South Pine Lake in La Porte, and harvested blocks of ice from the frozen surface of the lake each winter. This photograph dates from c. 1915, and comes from the photograph collection of R. Paul Bowman
