Palace Garage The Palace Garage was located on Lincoln Way at the corner of Chicago St., approximately where the Wendy's Restaurant and parking lot is today (2008). It was built by Carl Petering in 1916. Some of the products and services advertised in lettering over the doors and windows include Auto Storage, Oldsmobile 8 (referring to the number of cylinders), Jeffery 4 and 6, Grant Six, Rest Room, Auto Livery, and in the roofed shelter at the right-hand corner, Gas and Oils. The wheel carved of stone between the words Palace and Garage at the top, still exists today and can be viewed inside our museum, the La Porte County Historical Society Museum. It is located on the north wall of the top floor. On Oct. 9, 1918, the upper floor of the Palace Garage was rented to the E. A. Couturier band instru- ment company, which manufactured a variety of brass and woodwind instruments there. Several of these instruments are also on display at the La Porte County Historical Society Museum.
